In 'N Out Burger Khmer???
The "Killing Fields" Monument in Siem Reap
A sign hear said:
"The stones in this Stupa were collected from the field [the one with the In 'N Out Burger sign]. They were from city people evacuated to the countryside by the Khmer Rouge during the Pol Pot Regime, and then brutally slaughtered in 78-79."
During the Insanity (with a capitol I) of Pol Pot's dictatorship almost 1/3 of the population of Cambodia was killed. There were no innocent bystanders in this slaughter, the entire country was enslaved at gunpoint and made to work in the rice fields. Either you were working at gunpoint or you were pointing the gun. Period. No exceptions. If you were found laking in any way, you were killed and oftentimes had your vital organs cooked up for the soldiers to eat. The Khmer Rouge had a goal of having only 1 million people living in Cambodia. When they came to power there were 6.3 million, so they only got 1/3 of way to their goal. Fucking loonies. Pol Pot died in 1998 and the killing has finally stopped, but his second in command Iang Sary is still living near Siem Reap and remains free.
The victory gate
The victory in question was the one over the Thais that gave Siem Reap it's name.
